The Gard has a long standing tradition with regard to growing and producing food and drinks. Next to wine the Gard offers some characteristic products. The Pélardon (a goat cheese with an Appelation d’Origine Controlee), the “Onion doux” of the Cevennes and honey of the Cevennes are the most striking products. Being close to the Mediterranean assures a diverse supply of fish. Traditionally the Gard produces the finest olives and olive oil of France. Finally the chestnut, an important product of the Cevennes for centuries. The tree itself supplied wood and compost (from leaves and casing of the nuts). Moreover of course the nuts themselves, to be found in many local dishes. For instance the Creme de chataigne we produce on a very small scale.
